He signed as a young professional for Airdrie which is where he was spotted by Derby County scouts and later Joined their team. He played in teams alongside players such as Dally Duncan, Jack Bowers and George Dix. In 1934 he then joined Brentford to strengthen their squad which was believed to be their best up to that time, this team included Internationals such as Joe James, Dave McCulloch, Cyril and Leslie Smith.
Being considered as one of the best teams in the country at that time they went on to play the likes of Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Hamburg and Copenhagen. These players were also called upon as celeberities to make personal appearances on film sets, charity events etc (see photos). Crowds were between 30,000 and 40,000 which usually meant the gates were closed before kick off due to the stadium being sold out.
